According to alarming听听that surfaced in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, people of color and/or minorities have been disproportionately impacted by the Coronavirus in terms of death rates. African Americans account for more than 60% of all Louisiana鈥檚 COVID-19 deaths. The mission of the Health Equity Task Force is to do research that will result in improved health outcomes and equity in Louisiana.

鈥淢any feel that the solution is all personal responsibility, but society has a responsibility also,鈥 said Dr. Daniel Sarpong, Director of the Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education. 鈥淭hese disparities are structural, and, if not addressed, health outcomes will not change. Now, COVID-19 just blows the lid off, to make us pay closer attention.鈥

The task force鈥檚 work begins immediately. Researchers and members of the medical community from institutions around the city and state including the Southern University System, Tulane University, and LSU Health Care Services听to name a few, have also partnered with the Governor鈥檚 office in this effort to research and address health disparities. A statewide Health Equity Dashboard will be created to monitor the progress of the task force.
